Behavior management is a cornerstone of pediatric dental practice and plays a critical role in establishing positive dental experiences, reducing anxiety, enhancing cooperation, and ensuring successful treatment outcomes. Children often present unique psychological, emotional, cognitive, and developmental challenges that require specialized communication and management strategies. Over the years, behavior guidance techniques have evolved from traditional communication approaches to advanced psychological, pharmacological, and technology-assisted interventions. This review explores the principles, classification, clinical applications, effectiveness, ethical considerations, and future developments of behavior management techniques in pediatric patients. Techniques such as Tell-Show-Do, positive reinforcement, modeling, distraction, voice control, parental presence, sedation, and virtual reality-assisted interventions are discussed. Current evidence suggests that individualized behavior guidance significantly improves patient cooperation, treatment efficiency, and long-term attitudes toward oral healthcare. Future innovations involving artificial intelligence, immersive technologies, and personalized behavioral interventions are expected to further enhance pediatric patient management.
